Born in Nice, then under French rule, Garibaldi became a sailor, then a military leader. His campaigns, notably the Expedition of the Thousand in 1860, contributed to the unification of Italy.
1860: the conflict with the annexation
The same year, Nice was ceded to France. Garibaldi, who felt both Italian and from Nice, denounced the cession and the plebiscite that validated it.
Place Garibaldi in Nice
Place Garibaldi, lined with arcades in the Sardinian style, is one of the finest squares in the city. It bears a statue of the hero and lies close to the Old Port, at the foot of Mont-Boron.
