Born near Nice, Masséna distinguished himself in the Revolutionary and Imperial wars. Napoleon made him Marshal of the Empire, Duke of Rivoli and Prince of Essling.
Place Masséna
The heart of the city, Place Masséna was laid out in the 19th century in a neoclassical Sardinian style, with its red-ochre facades. It is known for its checkerboard paving and for the Sun Fountain, which carries a statue of Apollo.
The Villa Masséna
On the Promenade des Anglais, the Villa Masséna, built in the late 19th century by his descendant Victor Masséna, now houses the Masséna Museum devoted to the history of Nice.
