Catherine Ségurane, the Legendary Washerwoman of the Siege of Nice (1543)
Catherine Ségurane is the folk heroine of Nice. According to tradition, this washerwoman helped repel the 1543 Franco-Ottoman assault on the city.

The siege of Nice in 1543
In August 1543, a Franco-Ottoman fleet besieged Nice, then a land of the House of Savoy. The lower town fell, but the castle on its hill held out. Legend places Catherine Ségurane's feat at the Sincaire bastion.
Between history and legend
Tradition says that Catherine Ségurane, armed with a washerwoman's beetle, snatched a standard from the attackers and rallied the defenders. Historians debate whether the figure was real: her role is largely a matter of popular memory, which has become an emblem of Nice identity.
In her footsteps in Nice
Her name is given to a square in the Port district, near the Old Port and the foot of Mont-Boron, as well as to several streets. A plaque and a monument recall her memory on Castle Hill.
Mont-Boron, home to the Le Vert Boron apartment, overlooks the Old Port about ten minutes from Old Nice: an ideal starting point for exploring these historic places.
